What is an Excessive Heat Warning?

An Excessive Heat Warning is issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) when heat index values are expected to reach or exceed 105 degrees Fahrenheit (40.6 degrees Celsius) within the next 12 to 24 hours. Heat index values combine the effects of heat and humidity to provide an overall measure of how hot it feels to the human body.

Dangers of Excessive Heat

Excessive heat can pose serious health risks, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and those with chronic health conditions. Heat-related illnesses include heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke, which can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.

Symptoms of Heat-Related Illnesses

  • Heat cramps: Muscle cramps, usually in the legs or abdomen
  • Heat exhaustion: Heavy sweating, weakness, nausea, vomiting, headache, and dizziness
  • Heat stroke: High body temperature (103 degrees Fahrenheit or higher), hot and dry skin, rapid and strong pulse, confusion, and seizures

Staying Safe During Excessive Heat

During an Excessive Heat Warning, it is crucial to take steps to stay safe and prevent heat-related illnesses. Here are some tips:

  • Stay indoors as much as possible in air-conditioned areas.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, even if you don't feel thirsty.
  • Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest hours of the day (10 am to 4 pm).
  • Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothing.
  • Protect your skin from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen.
  • Take cool showers or baths.
  • Check on neighbors, especially the elderly and those with chronic health conditions.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.
  • Be aware of the signs of heat-related illnesses and seek medical attention immediately if you suspect someone is suffering from heat stroke.
