Earthquake Rumbles Vancouver Island
Magnitude 6.4 Quake Strikes Off Coast
Officials Monitoring Earthquake Swarm
An earthquake of magnitude 6.4 shook an area off Vancouver Island on Thursday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake struck at 7:30 am local time, with its epicenter located about 100 kilometers west of Port Renfrew. The depth of the earthquake was approximately 10 kilometers.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, but officials are closely monitoring the situation. The quake was felt throughout Vancouver Island and parts of mainland British Columbia. Aftershocks are expected in the coming days and weeks.
The USGS has issued a green alert for the area, indicating that there is a low likelihood of significant shaking or damage.
Earthquakes are common in the Vancouver Island region, which is located on the Cascadia subduction zone. The Cascadia subduction zone is a fault line where the Juan de Fuca Plate is slowly moving beneath the North American Plate. As the Juan de Fuca Plate moves, it builds up strain, which can be released in the form of earthquakes.
