Argentina formally requested on Thursday to join NATO as a global partner, a status that would clear the way for greater political and security cooperation.

Argentina wants to become a NATO partner, while Colombia seeks to join BRICS, a group of emerging economies that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

Catherine Osborn, the writer of Foreign Policy’s weekly Latin America newsletter, reported that Argentina officially requested to become a partner of the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance on April 18, with the announcement made during a meeting between Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels.
